Canadian brother duo Lockyer is featured in CanvasRebel, sharing the story behind their music, their journey from Northern Ontario to Toronto, and the experiences shaping their next chapter as artists.
We’re excited to share that Lockyer has been featured in CanvasRebel Magazine, a publication that highlights the stories, experiences, and creative journeys of artists, entrepreneurs, and independent voices.
For us, music has always been about more than writing songs. It’s about the people we meet, the places we come from, and the moments that stay with us long after they’ve passed. Being featured by CanvasRebel is an opportunity to share a little more of the story behind Lockyer and the experiences that continue to shape our music.
From Northern Ontario to the World
We’re Will and Charlie Lockyer, two brothers from Northern Ontario who grew up making music together. What started with piano-playing and singing around the living room for our grandparents gradually grew into something much bigger.
With encouragement from our family and a shared love of songwriting, we began performing for local audiences, playing shows in our hometown, and finding our footing as musicians. By the end of high school, we had opened for established Canadian artists and performed headline shows for thousands of people.
Those early experiences taught us that music has a unique ability to bring people together. They also gave us a reason to keep pushing beyond the place we called home.
Today, as Lockyer, we're continuing to build on that foundation while developing a sound and identity that feel true to who we are.
The Story Behind Lockyer
Our music lives somewhere between indie pop, alternative pop, and cinematic songwriting. We’re drawn to anthemic melodies, layered harmonies, raw production, and lyrics that capture the feeling of a particular moment in time.
A lot of our songwriting comes back to the same questions: What does it mean to grow up? What happens when you leave home to chase something bigger? How do you hold on to the people, places, and versions of yourself that helped make you who you are?
Growing up in Northern Ontario has shaped the way we see the world, and those experiences continue to find their way into our music. Even as we build our lives and careers in Toronto, there's a part of home that stays with us.
We want our songs to feel like memories you can return to. The kind that remind you of a person, a place, or a moment you didn't realize was important until it had already passed.
A New Chapter for Lockyer
Our recent transition from Lockyer Boys to Lockyer marks an important step in our journey.
The name Lockyer Boys was part of our story for years, and it carries the memories of the shows, songs, and experiences that brought us here. But as we've grown as musicians and as people, we felt it was time for our name to grow with us.
Lockyer feels like a natural continuation of that journey. It's simpler, more personal, and leaves room for the music and the story to speak for themselves.
We're building this next chapter around new releases, live performances, and a closer connection with the people who find something of their own in our songs. Rather than chasing a particular image or trying to fit into a predefined category, we're focused on making music that feels honest to us.
That means embracing the imperfections, the nostalgia, the big melodies, and the quieter moments that make a song feel human.
